page1image10010832Ampleforth and District Gardening ClubAffiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society Newsletter SPRING has SPRUNGApril 2021 Yes! it did arrive on the 20th March – a beautiful sunny day reaching 15/16 degrees Centigrade in our area. However, it has relapsed slightly since, but we predict that it will improve soon!
Stop-Press News Sue Shepherd has arranged a free visit to RHS Harlow Carr on Friday 14th May for members from 10.30am through the clubʼs affiliation membership (saves the £12.15 entry fee which redeems all the club membership fee in one fell swoop). As last year, members will need to inform Sue of their intention join this visit by email to sue@sueandjon.net or on 01439 788993 asap so that the free entrance tickets can be ordered and organise their own transport by car to ensure they get there by 10.30am. Further details will be in the May Newsletter, which will be sent out at the end of April.Reminder As reported in the March Newsletter the Clubʼs indoor meetings for April and May have been cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown measures for England provided by the PMʼs ʻRoad Mapʼ. We are currently planning for the Plant Sale on the 22nd May to go ahead in the at Ampleforth Village Hall mainly outdoors in the car park with refreshments within the building under the Covid regulations if possible. Further details will be in the May Newsletter.Membership The paid up membership for 2021 is now 75, which is very encouraging and we are sure that you will be taking full advantage of the 10% club discount at the 7 local garden centre outlets listed on the card. We will not be sending out any further reminders of the need to renew membership but please note that from the end of this month current members who have not renewed will be removed from the circulation list of the Newsletter and further A&DGC communications. We do thank everyone who have supported the club in these difficult times.The 2021 Plant Sale Preparations The improvement in the weather recently has enabled us to get out in our gardens and rescue any perennials surplus to requirements for sale at the CLUB PLANT SALE on Saturday 22nd May. Please ensure they are potted up in clean pots with any pre-existing plant labels removed before attaching your own labels with the plant name. Home grown flower/veg plants grown from seed are also welcome. Preserves, cakes or craft items are also welcomed. Details of when to deliver your Plant Sale offerings to the Ampleforth Village hall will be given in the May Newsletter.June and July Garden Visits Shirley Halliwell is actively pursuing suitable garden visit venues for June and July and should be ready to announce the details and booking/travel arrangements in the May NewsletterTHE SPRING COMPETITION Since Covid 19 visited the UK just over a year ago we have Clapped for the NHSCheered for the Key Workers and Saluted Sir Captain Tom but what about those great Guys and Girls who have steadfastly delivered our Mail, Parcels, groceries, green groceries and milk etc? It is an appropriate time to say thanks to them all with our SPRING COMPETITION – ‘THANKING All DELIVERY FOLK FOR SERVING US DURING COVID’ Simply design and build a doorstep flower arrangement in any container of your choice featuring Spring flowers and foliage with a touch of your own ingenuity, add the ‘Thanking’ caption above, then take a digital photo of it with a phone or camera and send it digitally with your name to ampleforthanddistrict.gc.news@gmail.com by Sat 15th May and we will print it and display all the entries at the Plant Sale on 22nd May where they will be judged and an A&DGC prize and certificate awarded to the winner.page1image7970880 page1image7966272 page1image7966848 page1image7967424page1image7970112David Badham, Chairperson/Newsletter Editor
